Ange Postecoglou expects ‘game-changer’ to be fit for Tottenham today

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has played down concerns over James Maddison’s fitness ahead of their Premier League match on Saturday.

The Spurs playmaker made his first start for three months in midweek, helping the Lilywhites run out 3-2 winners over Brentford on Wednesday night.

Maddison had been out since mid-November with an ankle injury, only returning to action off the bench in the FA Cup loss to Manchester City.

The 27-year-old needed a little time to dust off the cobwebs against the Bees but quickly grew into the game and looked up to speed.

Maddison dictated proceedings for much of the game and his blocked effort led to Richarlison’s goal in the second half.

The England international did have to come off towards the end of the game with cramp.

This led to some questions over Maddison’s immediate availability in such a quick turnaround of games and whether he could be rested.

When asked by football.london whether Maddison would be fine to start against Everton, Postecoglou replied: “He’s a professional footballer, mate.

“I hope so because if we’re going to be playing in Europe, unless he wants to pick and choose which games to play, I’d suggest that Madders will be right for tomorrow.”

Tottenham getting back to their best as personnel issues ease

This is really good news. Maddison is such a “game-changer” of a player, and he has really been missed by Spurs, so it’s good to have him back and quickly getting up to speed.

Tottenham began the season brightly but, with injuries and suspensions taking their toll, their form wavered somewhat. However, they’ve remained afloat and are back in the top four.

Now, with the injury situation easing and not long before all the international tournament players return, Spurs will be eager to kick on and cement their spot in the Champions League places.
