Andy Robertson says Liverpool midfielder is going to explode this season, it’s not Florian Wirtz

Andy Robertson is expecting one of his Liverpool teammates to make a significant impact at Anfield this season.

The 31-year-old has enjoyed a return to first-team duties in recent weeks and has started two of the Reds’ last three matches.

Milos Kerkez’s first-half substitution against Burnley allowed the vice captain to reclaim a starting spot at left-back and has impressed since the win at Turf Moor, particularly with his opening goal against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

He is playing for his long-term future at Anfield this season, his contract is set to expire in 2026; and as TBR Football understands Liverpool are not prioritising Robertson’s deal as things stand.

However, Robertson remains fully committed to the club as always and has now named which Reds midfielder he believes will have a transformative season.

Andy Robertson backs Curtis Jones to become an important player

DAZN asked the Liverpool squad to pull names out of a hat and predict what the player would do this season, and Robertson drew midfielder Curtis Jones.

“Curtis Jones, become one of the main players at Liverpool Football Club.”

Jones is one of the players, alongside Ryan Gravenberch, whom the Reds will look to tie down to a new long-term deal before Robertson’s future is resolved.

The 24-year-old enjoyed his most productive campaign to date last season; his three goals and three assists in 33 Premier League outings were the most goal contributions he has ever recorded and the most times he has featured for the Reds.

While the Scouser has yet to establish himself as a regular starter, Jones made his senior debut for England last term and could very well be in contention to be named in the 2026 World Cup squad.

Jones is regarded as the most underrated talent at Anfield, and it is clear that he is rated very highly by Arne Slot, but he does face fierce competition for a starting berth.

The arrival of Florian Wirtz has made opportunities to start even more scarce, and while the German has struggled for Liverpool since arriving in English football, it will not be long before the £116 million man finds his feet.

Florian Wirtz is facing a battle to retain his starting berth at Liverpool

Ahead of the Reds’ trip to Crystal Palace, it is appearing increasingly likely that Slot will start with the midfield trio who helped win the league title last season and claim a 2-1 win against Everton last time out.

Indeed, Wirtz’s struggles will give Jones confidence that he can temporarily overtake the German in the pecking order at Anfield due to his wealth of Premier League experience.

Jones’ main problem for the Reds has never been his talent but rather his consistency; he has had purple patches throughout his career, but failed to maintain those performances over a prolonged period.

Wirtz would face a difficult path back into the starting eleven should Jones finally find consistency this season, but as things stand, it appears to be a race between the two as to which will force Slot into rethinking his strongest midfield three.
