Andros Townsend was hoping Cody Gakpo hadn't scored at World Cup

Andros Townsend has joked on ITV (broadcast on 29/11; 15:30) that he was hoping that Cody Gakpo was not the goalscorer when learning that the Netherlands had taken the lead against Qatar on Tuesday after he was linked with Everton in the summer.

Gakpo has been one of the revelations of the tournament so far. Of course, he went into the tournament after absolutely flying with PSV Eindhoven.

And he has carried that form into the World Cup. Gakpo had scored in both of the Netherlands’ opening two games.

Townsend hoped Gakpo hadn’t scored

And he made it three from three on Tuesday. It was the 23-year-old who gave Louis van Gaal’s men the lead against Qatar. With that, plenty of Premier League sides will probably be feeling quite foolish.

ITV commentator Seb Hutchinson noted that he was linked with Arsenal and Leeds in the summer. And that prompted Townsend to point out that he was also mentioned as a potential Everton target.

“If I’m not mistaken, I think he was linked with my club over the summer as well,” he told ITV.

Hutchinson then put to him that he would take him at Goodison Park. And that left Townsend joking that he would not want to be competing with Gakpo for a place in the side.

“Oh, he’s attacking player so I’d hope not. When the goal came up, I was hoping it wasn’t him again,” he added.

Of course, Townsend would surely love it if Everton signed Gakpo. Few forwards in world football are in better form right now than the Dutchman.

He has 13 goals and 17 assists in just 24 games for PSV. He has actually been directly involved in more goals than Erling Haaland so far this season – albeit mainly in the Eredivisie.

And he has continued to impress now on the biggest stage in the world.

For many of his admirers, the chance to sign Gakpo has probably now passed them by. He has become a superstar. And he is surely going to cost an eye-watering sum.

Certainly, those at Everton eyeing a move in the summer are probably holding out little hope of still signing Gakpo.
