Andros Townsend raves about £50m-rated Euro 2020 star that Tottenham could go after this summer

Tottenham Hotspur could make a move for Leeds United and England midfielder Kalvin Phillips this summer. The 25-year-old has been linked on numerous occasions with the North London club over the past 12 months. Now, Andros Townsend has delivered his verdict on the Leeds ace.

Phillips, 25, was England’s best player in their opening match against Croatia at Euro 2020 – after a brilliant season with Leeds. He is expected to retain his place in the starting line-up under Gareth Southgate when England take on Scotland at Wembley on Friday evening.

Tottenham are expected to go after a new midfielder whenever they can finally find someone to replace Jose Mourinho. Phillips might be that man – with The Mirror claiming earlier in the season that Spurs and Liverpool were planning a £50million bid this summer. Townsend gave his verdict.

“I don’t think you’re on your own in underestimating Kalvin Phillips,” Crystal Palace and ex-Tottenham star Townsend told Ashley Cole on the ITV podcast. “You don’t get the full affect of what he does on TV. It is only when you’re watching him in the stadium or playing against him that you see.

Is It Harder To Win Than The Euros Than The World Cup?!

“You see how hard he works and what he brings to the game. He doesn’t stop running for the whole game. doesn’t stop running. Unbelievable. When you’re looking to counter attack, he’s there, breaking up the play. But he’s the first one to get Leeds on the attack. He’s non-stop for 90 minutes.”

Would Phillips be a good signing for Tottenham, amid Townsend comments on Leeds star?

Last season, many Tottenham fans would argue that there was a lack of effort among certain players. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was excellent at the base of the midfielder – but he needs a partner that is ready to work as hard next to him. Phillips, as ex-Leeds loanee Townsend says, does not stop.

While £50million is a big outlay and a club-record move for Spurs, it would be a brilliant bit of business if they could get the England ace. He would be the Tottenham’s heartbeat for the best part of the next decade – as he looks as though he will be at Elland Road.
