Andros Townsend has praised a Leeds United star who doesn’t stop running
Andros Townsend has praised the running power of Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips.
Leeds-born midfielder Phillips has enjoyed a superb season with his club in the Premier League, and he’s a part of England’s 26-man squad at Euro 2020.
The 25-year-old has become a member of the Three Lions squad this year because of the level of his performances at Elland Road.
Usually, he operates as the deep-lying playmaker at the base of midfield. He’s proven how pivotal he is to the system under Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa.
For England, it’s a slightly different role. He’s slotted into a midfield two at times alongside West Ham’s Declan Rice, and the duo provide the defensive stability to allow the talented attackers to thrive ahead of them.
Townsend has said the Leeds talisman would be fully worthy of a starting position at Euro 2020.
“Yeah very good player. Great engine up and down the pitch and doesn’t stop running. If he does get the nod, he fully deserves it as well,” he said.
Entire Leeds squad could start a running club, including Phillips
Leeds players have had fitness drilled into them from day one under Bielsa, so their group must one of the fittest in the world.
Despite being the playmaker in front of the defence, Phillips is no exception to that.
The defensive midfielder is an eye-catching player with his composure in possession and range of passing.
However, he will always do the defensive side well with his aggressive tackling and the way he covers the pitch so well out of possession is superb.
