Andros Townsend comments on reports that Liverpool want to sign Aston Villa star
The Athletic have claimed that Liverpool are considering a move to sign Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn this summer. Jurgen Klopp was impressed with his performance against Liverpool, during Villa’s 7-2 win last season. Andros Townsend has now commented on the reports.
McGinn, 26, has been excellent for Villa since joining the Midlands side in the summer of 2018 from Hibernian. Guiding Villa to promotion back into the Premier League, the Scotland ace has been excellent in the Premier League. Playing 65 Premier League games, he has had a hand in 15 goals.
Scoring six, he has created nine. Now, the Scotland Euro 2020 star is a target for the Reds – though the report claims bidding would have to start at a fee between £45million and £50million. Asked about the reports, ex-England winger Townsend thinks McGinn at Liverpool would be a perfect fit.
“The type of player McGinn is, is perfect for Liverpool and the way Jurgen Klopp plays. Fast, strong, defensive minded,” Townsend told TalkSPORT. “100% he could a fit straight in to the way Liverpool want to play. McGinn has the discipline to sit there and allow the full-backs to play high.”
McGinn would be a brilliant signing for Liverpool, amid Townsend claims
Townsend is right. McGinn would fit perfectly in Liverpool’s engine room. The way the Reds play, is their hard-working midfielders allow the full-backs to get forward. It means the likes of Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum offer a shield on the flanks – but also a midfield role.
Wijnaldum is about to leave and Liverpool need to replace him. McGinn might just be the perfect man to bring in as cover in the middle of the park. However, he would be an expensive addition – especially given Wijnaldum is leaving on a free to join PSG.
