Andros Townsend backs reported Arsenal move for Brighton star Ben White
Arsenal are reportedly closing in on a move to sign Brighton defender Ben White this summer – and Andros Townsend believes it is a perfect signing. The Brighton defender has enjoyed a brilliant 12 months, and could cap it off by joining the Gunners. A fee is likely to reach a whopping £50million.
White, 23, has been in stunning form for Brighton. Returning to the Seagullls after a loan spell at Leeds, White starred for Graham Potter’s side despite being used in numerous positions. Right of three, one of two in a back four, holding midfield – White has it all. England came calling.
He is now a part of the 26-man squad representing England at Euro 2020. The Athletic reported that Arsenal are closing in on a £45million move, plus £5million in add-ons deal for White. Asked about Arsenal signing White, Townsend said it is a perfect signing – and that White ran rings round him.
“He’d be worth every single penny, for the way Arteta wants to play, playing out from the back, he would be perfect,” Townsend said. “I was tasked with closing him down against Brighton, but he is so cool and calm, he ran rings round me. Be would be a great signing if Arsenal do get that over the line.”
White to Arsenal: Who goes if White joins, following Townsend comments?
David Luiz is set to leave the club with his contract about to expire. It leaves the Gunners with Calum Chambers, Rob Holding, William Saliba, Gabriel and Pablo Mari – along with White. Four is plenty. So two need to go. The chances are that Saliba is likely to go on loan once again.
Chambers offers versatility at right-back and in midfield, so he should be kept. Gabriel is probably the best of the current bunch, while Mari was signed by Arteta. Perhaps it will be Holding that is allowed to leave, then, if a deal for White gets over the line.
