Analysing Georgino Wijnaldum’s man of the match display for Liverpool against Tottenham

The TBR Football Man of the Match for his superb display against Spurs with 44% of the vote, Georgino Wijnaldum may not have been on the scoresheet but he was the star of the show. Too often accused of being carried along in Liverpool’s midfield, doing his job effectively but without ever really having a decisive impact on the outcome of the game, that could certainly not be said about Georgino Wijnaldum on Saturday evening when Tottenham came to Anfield.

Lining up alongside Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana in midfield, with the first choice front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Phillipe Coutinho in front of him, it was only the sixth time this season that the Dutchman has had such a luxury of movement in and around him, and the Merseyside team are unbeaten with that set up and have won on five of those six occasions.

Wijnaldum was crucial to the victory, never more so than with his incredible assist for Sadio Mane’s opening goal. The £25 million summer signing picked up the ball and instantly looked to play in the Senegal international as he raced past Ben Davies, with the perfectly weighted pass leaving Davies and Hugo Lloris with no chance up against the clinical forward.

It was just one of Wijnaldum’s superb passes, with his pass completion ratio of 88.6% far higher than any of his teammates, and including several flicks and tricks which got the Anfield crowd up on their feet to applaud the ex-Newcastle man’s best performance in a Liverpool shirt to date.

With Jordan Henderson staying deep, Wijnaldum was afforded more freedom to get forward and look to spray the ball around from deep and he did so to make a devastating impact. Interchanging with Adam Lallana as the more advanced of the midfield three, Wijnaldum looked more comfortable than he has of late and showed a real positive. If he can maintain this level of performance in the weeks to come, he could be key to getting Liverpool’s season back on track.
