'Almost ungettable': Arsenal and Newcastle need 'stupid money' to land 'astonishing' forward, says journalist
Newcastle United and Arsenal will need to pay what Dean Jones calls ‘stupid money’ if they want to sign Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen.
Both the Gunners and the Magpies have been linked with a move for Diaby this window. The ‘astonishing‘ Diaby has been linked more recently with Arsenal, but his name has been mentioned alongside Newcastle for pretty much the entire summer.
However, according to football journalist Dean Jones, Diaby is more or less off limits now, with Leverkusen wanting huge money to even consider selling.
“Moussa Diaby was a name that cropped up this week and they (Leverkusen) just don’t want to lose him. Obviously Newcastle have been knocking on this door for like two months now. It wasn’t even a case of money,” Jones said on the Football Terrace Podcast.
“It was more that Leverkusen are so desperate to keep the group together. They’re going to give it a crack together so I think Moussa Diaby is almost ungettable. If you pay stupid money then you might be able to get it to happen but I don’t think Arsenal would do that.”
It seems, then, that both Mikel Arteta and Eddie Howe will need to look elsewhere to sign a new winger.
TBR’s View: Diaby Too Expensive For Arsenal And Newcastle
It’s all well and good showing ambition but there comes a point where you just have to walk away from certain deals.
That seems to be the case here with Moussa Diaby, with Leverkusen seemingly pricing teams out of a move for the impressive speedster.
Diaby is one who will remain on the radar though. If he has another good season, clubs like Newcastle and Arsenal will keep their interest and in the end, might end up shelling out a huge sum anyway.
