Pundit Ally McCoist has now commented on some business that Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United may consider for the January transfer window.

If it’s inconsistency you are after then Manchester United have definitely been the team to support this season.

Although, despite all of the turmoil and disappointment for ten Hag’s side, they do still remain seventh in the table after a draw at Anfield.

And with a respectable finish still salvageable, McCoist has now named four players they should consider selling in order to progress.

McCoist was speaking about United’s business with Jeff Stelling, and agreed that ten Hag should look to sell all of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, Casemiro and Anthony Martial.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “I think there will be interest, I don’t think there is any doubt about it over there. I can understand it.

“There’s definitely a need for a change in personnel required at Manchester United.

“One of the hardest things in football now is to offload players on long and lucrative contracts so I can understand why he’s heading there [Saudi Arabia] because it’s one of the places on the planet who would take some of these players.

“You have to start somewhere and the four you mentioned would certainly be at the top of the list, if not immediately at the top of the list.

“I would think there will be big changes at Manchester United, so I’m not surprised.”

Of course, it would be pretty remarkable if United did embark on yet another rebuild after Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure.

Admittedly, Casemiro is the only name on the list of United players McCoist mentioned that ten Hag actually signed.

But there has been so much spending at the club over the last few years simply backing the wrong players or the wrong project.

And such a rebuild would be so costly for the club yet again.

McCoist and Stelling are probably right in thinking that departures to the Middle East would be the best opportunity for Man United to offload some of their struggling stars.

However, it’s never as easy as that in football, and the club wouldn’t simply be able to offload all four January.

Of those mentioned, perhaps Martial and Sancho will be the priority sales in the near future.

Neither are playing a significant role for ten Hag, with the latter not even considered for match day squads.

And should they leave, it could pave the way for an audacious bid for a Premier League striker
