Steven Gerrard could reportedly leave Rangers and join Aston Villa soon, and Ally McCoist has identified his replacement for Rangers – on TalkSPORT.

Gerrard, 41, is said to be the leading contender to get the Villa job. The Mail report as much, claiming an approach is expected from Villa this week.

The Liverpool legend has a contract at Rangers until June 2024. He has sparkled as Ibrox manager, winning the league last season, unbeaten.

Gerrard stopped Celtic from achieving 10 in a row, and has overseen the rise of Rangers back in European competition. McCoist has reacted.

Rangers legend McCoist was asked about a replacement for Gerrard, and he suggested a swap. He backed Dean Smith moving from Villa to Rangers.

“I really like Dean Smith, I do, yes,” McCoist said. “I think he is a good coach, a good manager. I would not have a problem with him being at my club.”

McCoist on Smith: Would he really consider Rangers, after Villa exit?

Why not? Smith will be looking to get back into management, after feeling somewhat hard done by in losing the Villa gig after a few losses.

Smith has impressed in his three managerial roles. At Walsall, he worked on a shoe string and brought stability in the third tier.

At Brentford, he guided the Bees almost to Premier League promotion. At Villa, again – promotion – and then kept Villa in the top tier for two seasons.

He is a top manager. A good man manager, and spends well. If Rangers are to lose Gerrard, Smith is probably the best out-of-work manager available.
