Report details Rangers boss Steven Gerrard’s stance on taking Aston Villa job

The Daily Mail claims Rangers manager Steven Gerrard would seriously consider any approach made by Aston Villa – which is expected this week.

Gerrard, 41, has emerged as the front runner for the Villa job – after Dean Smith was sacked on Sunday, following Friday’s loss to Southampton.

Liverpool legend Gerrard has guided Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title. Going unbeaten last season and stopping Celtic’s pursuit of 10 in a row.

He is in a good place to see off the challenge of Celtic for a second successive season, while also hugely improving his side’s Europe stature.

The Mail report Villa are very interested in Gerrard and will approach Rangers this week. If that is the case, then Gerrard is ready to listen.

It is believed his coaching staff, consisting of Gary McAllister, Jordan Milsom, Michael Beale and Tom Culshaw would follow him to Villa.

Gerrard to Villa: Ideally, Rangers boss would have until summer

It would give Gerrard the chance to win a second successive Scottish Premiership title. Improve his CV and get a pre-season at Villa.

But Villa will certainly not wait until then. They need a manager right now and going down the interim gaffer route is not something they want.

Gerrard may have to compromise and consider a move now. Brendan Rodgers was forced into a decision while at Celtic, joining Leicester.

Gerrard’s exit would come as painful to many Rangers fans, but ultimately, he has improved Rangers beyond all expectation. He goes, as an Ibrox icon.
