Alan Shearer says Spurs-linked Szczesny was ‘magnificent’ on Wednesday

Alan Shearer has told BBC One (broadcast on 30/11; 21:02) that Wojciech Szczesny was magnificent for Poland against Argentina and was crucial in getting his country through at the World Cup – amid reports Tottenham Hotspur have been offered the goalkeeper.

Poland booked their place in the last 16 in dramatic fashion in Qatar. They were beaten 2-0 by the Copa America champions. And yet, they went through on goal difference. Mexico’s 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia was not enough to send them through.

With goal difference decisive, Poland will be breathing a sigh of relief. And certainly, Szczesny will be receiving a lot of credit from his teammates.

Szczesny was magnificent

It was the 32-year-old who produced an amazing save to deny Lionel Messi from the penalty spot. He had given away the spot-kick. However, it is hard to understand why the decision was given in the first place.

Justice was done with Szczesny making the save. And he went on to make a few more impressive saves as Poland went through by the barest of margins.

Certainly, Shearer does not believe that Poland would be preparing for a tie with France in the next round without the Juventus star.

“They could have scored, should have scored another two or three. But Poland have got their goalkeeper to thank, Szczesny, for getting them through to the next round because he was magnificent tonight,” he told BBC One.

Spurs may taken note of display

There may have been some interest from those at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in seeing how Szczesny performed.

A report from 90min recently claimed that Spurs had been offered the chance to sign Szczesny as they look at long-term successors to Hugo Lloris.

Of course, signing Szczesny would be hugely controversial given his connections to Arsenal. So it is no surprise that the report suggested that Spurs are not currently looking at a move.

However, it has not been completely ruled out either. And with that, performances like the one on Wednesday will probably not go unnoticed.
