Alan Shearer says Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier's positioning is just as good as his distribution
Illan Meslier was nominated among eight Premier League talents for the Young Player of the Season, and Alan Shearer has praised him. The Leeds United goalkeeper has broken records throughout the campaign, and Shearer has paid tribute to the Frenchman’s positioning and distribution.
Meslier, 21, broke two eye-catching Premier League records in what is his second season in English football – and first in which he has been first choice. Joining Leeds on loan from Lorient in 2019, he initially began as cover for Kiko Casilla. But this term, he played 35 of the 38 league games.
Before he turned 21, he clocked up eight of his 11 Premier League clean sheets – beating Hart’s previous record of seven. Then, he became the youngest goalkeeper to clock up double digits in terms of clean sheets – more than Hart. No surprises, then, that Meslier has been nominated.
Speaking about Meslier in a video posted on the Premier League’s Twitter account, Shearer analysed the French stopper. He applauded the £5million, £16,500-a-week (Spotrac) goalkeeper – claiming his positioning and distribution have been key components of a brilliant campaign.
“He’s an excellent shot-stopper first and foremost, keeping 11 clean sheets. His positioning is also as strong as his distribution and he ranks fourth overall in save percentage while facing the fourth-most shots in the league,” Shearer told the Premier League’s Twitter account, about Meslier.
How long can Leeds keep Meslier, following from Shearer comments?
Meslier’s form has been much-discussed. Earlier in the season, he made numerous mistakes – both in possession and as a goalkeeper. But towards the second half of the season, Meslier became much stronger in dominating his box. Claiming crosses, being braver, and less indecisive.
His confidence improved and that has also seen his distribution become near-perfect. Can Leeds keep Meslier? Well, unless Leeds continue to grow into a European club over the next few years, Meslier’s ambition might outweigh Leeds. The National claim PSG want him.
