Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has claimed that he would sign Ivan Toney if he was in charge of the club now.

The Magpies crashed out of the Champions League this week despite a spirited performance against AC Milan. With the January transfer window coming up, Eddie Howe‘s side need reinforcements, and Shearer wants his old club to bring Toney back.

Alan Shearer says he would sign Ivan Toney for Newcastle United

Newcastle United need to be active in the January transfer window, and a new striker could really help push them to achieve their goals.

Alexander Isak is a terrific forward. He has everything in his game, and seven goals in 12 Premier League appearances is not a bad return at all.

As a backup, Newcastle have Callum Wilson, and as good as the Englishman is, they could do better. He will turn 32 in February and injuries haven’t been too kind to him.

Newcastle should consider signing a new forward in the January transfer window, and Alan Shearer would love to see them bring Ivan Toney back to the club.

When asked about the Brentford striker, Shearer said on The Rest Is Football podcast: “I would, If I was in charge of recruitment at Newcastle.

“I think he’s a really good player and I think he’s a really good option. Newcastle need to improve in that department, and they need another option in there, so I don’t think there will be any shortage of suitors for Ivan Toney.”

Ivan Toney will have a point to prove if he joins Newcastle

Ivan Toney is currently banned from playing football after he was found guilty of breaching the FA’s betting rules. He will be allowed back in the middle of January.

The £70 million-rated Englishman will surely be determined to deliver after spending such a long time on the sidelines, but what will make him want to perform even better is if he returns to St James’ Park.

Toney spent three years on Newcastle United‘s books back in the day. He only made four senior appearances for the Magpies then before leaving the club in 2018.

Now, Toney is a more accomplished striker, and if he joins Newcastle, we’re sure he will want to prove a point to everyone at the club. He has been linked with a return to St James’ Park as well.
