Alan Shearer says David Moyes told him West Ham looked at signing ‘incredible’ Germany Euro 2024 attacker

Alan Shearer has admitted that David Moyes once considered signing a German forward who is now starring at Euro 2024, a call he got ‘wrong’.

Throughout his second spell as West Ham manager, Moyes seriously struggled to recruit a number nine who could effectively combine with Michail Antonio.

West Ham fans watching Euro 2024 on Monday will have seen glimpses of Gianluca Scamaca for Italy, one of several strikers who struggled to settle in east London.

Of course, Julen Lopetegui is thought to have requested a new number nine himself this summer, perhaps a little underwhelmed by the prospect of Danny Ings dovetailing with 34-year-old Antonio.

West Ham are said to be seriously interested in Lille striker Jonathan David, who is catching the attention of several top European clubs right now.

But perhaps the Hammers wouldn’t be in this situation today had Moyes decided differently when considering a move for a Niclas Fullkrug, who is now enjoying some ‘incredible’ form.

David Moyes admits he got it ‘wrong’ not signing Niclas Fullkrug for West Ham

Speaking on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast, Shearer said that he had spoken to Moyes, who confessed that West Ham decided against signing Fullkrug in the past.

Now at Borussia Dortmund, Moyes and his team presumably considered a move for the 31-year-old during his time at Werder Bremen.

But either way, Moyes admitted it was probably a decision they got ‘wrong’.

Shearer explained: “I was speaking to David Moyes about him as well. And he was saying that they had a look at him [Fullkrug] at West Ham, but they just thought he was missing one or two things.

“But for the last sort of six months, he sort of reviewed it and thought, maybe they got that one wrong.”

Fullkrug scored 18 goals for Dortmund in total this season, and appears to be ageing like a fine wine.

And perhaps what’s just as appealing as Fullkrug’s scoring is his traditional style, a powerhouse finisher who truly plays with his heart on his sleeve.

That being said, Fullkrug isn’t going to help Lopetegui and Tim Steidten now, who do need to find West Ham a goal-scorer.

And that perhaps explains West Ham’s interest in Lyon attacker Rayan Cherki.
