Alan Shearer has defended Steve Bruce on Twitter after Newcastle finally announced his exit on Wednesday morning – two weeks after the takeover.
Bruce, 60, remained in charge for Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to Tottenham – with the owners giving him the chance to clock up his 1000th match as manager.
97 of those came as Newcastle boss – but he only won 28 times. Following the work of Rafa Benitez, Bruce failed to win fans over during his reign.
Newcastle fans have wanted Bruce to be sacked long before the takeover and now, the new owners have decided to call it a day.
Although he had kept Newcastle in the Premier League, Bruce had failed to pick up a single win from his side’s first eight league games this season.
But despite all that, Shearer defended the outgoing Newcastle manager on Twitter. While he feels it was time, he applauded Bruce for his effort.
Shearer on Bruce: Harshly treated or Newcastle fans rightly fed up?
Newcastle fans are entitled to be fed up, not just of Bruce but the reign in which Bruce’s tenure came under. Now, Bruce and Mike Ashley have gone.
A lack of investment from Ashley culminated into making Newcastle a defensive side. They had to sit back and fight against better sides.
That was the only way they could survive. But under Bruce, there was no tactical awareness or versatility to then attack when given the chance.
Yes, they survived the drop – but they have been going backwards. Fingers should be pointed at Ashley, but some at Bruce too.
