Alan Hutton shares what Aston Villa star told him about position he loves to play

Alan Hutton has revealed that Aston Villa’s John McGinn told him he loves to play in more advanced positions for his country.

McGinn, 26, is a key player at both club and international level.

For Villa, the box-to-box central midfielder usually plays as part of midfield duo next to Douglas Luiz.

However, in a Scotland shirt he’s part of a midfield three where he often finds himself pressing as the more advanced player.

The left-footed star has 10 goals in just 33 Scotland caps. Meanwhile, his Villa record is 13 goals in 111 appearances.

Pundit and ex-Villa defender Hutton says that McGinn enjoys a licence to join in with attacks.

“I spoke to him and said do you prefer playing there?” Hutton told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.

“And he’s just like: ‘I love it. I love having that freedom to go press high and use my energy at the top of the pitch.’ I think he prefers that and you see with the goals that he scores.”

Villa man McGinn turns into Scotland talisman

McGinn is undoubtedly an important player in a strong Villa XI built by manager Dean Smith.

However, it feels like really steps up to one of the key individuals for his nation.

His brilliant aggression, stamina and work rate are parts of his game everyone is aware of. But he’s got real intelligence in attacking areas too.

If Scotland are to achieve anything at Euro 2020 this summer, McGinn is likely to be at the heart of the success. Meanwhile, Villa teammate Jack Grealish could end up playing a similar role for rivals England.
