Tottenham Hotspur loanee Giovani Lo Celso started for Villarreal in their Champions League clash against Bayern Munich last night and he ran the show against the German champions.
Nobody expected Unai Emery’s side to get anything away from the game against Bayern last night. However, the Yellow Submarine surprised everyone and picked up a fine win.
Arnaut Danjuma’s goal early in the first half proved to be enough for Villarreal, but they could easily have scored two or three more goals to all but kill the tie off.
Everyone who watched the game last night was impressed by Villarreal and especially Lo Celso, who was rightly named the Man of the Match.
Giovani Lo Celso praised after fantastic Champions League performance
The Tottenham loanee received immense praise from fans, pundits and the press. Media outlets in Spain and in his home country of Argentina hailed his performance last night and were absolutely blown away by his work rate in a game where he just ‘didn’t stop running’.
Spanish outlet AS wrote: “The Argentine midfielder won the award for best player of the match. He participated in the play of the goal and did not stop running both in defence and when launching the counterattacks.”
Ole in Argentina wrote: “An almost unbeatable approach by Unai Emery, who had a giant Giovanni Lo Celso, an absolute figure on the court and showing that he has earned his place in the National Team.”
The same outlet further said: “Gio played a great match against a rival who takes the demand to the maximum. With his simple and useful football, without fanfare but with wisdom, the left-hander was one of the great figures in the triumph of the Yellow Submarine. A statistical summary gives another argument to his enormous game.”

Tottenham loanee’s stats vs Bayern Munich last night
Giovani Lo Celso started on the right side of a 4-4-2 and was heavily involved in almost everything Villarreal did in attack last night.
The Argentine, in his 90 minutes on the pitch, completed 36 accurate passes, made 12 recoveries, four tackles, five key passes, and created one big chance. He also won eight duels, made two interceptions and won three fouls, making the performance last night a truly memorable one.
Lo Celso outshined every single Villarreal teammate in each of the above-mentioned stats. He deservedly won the Man of the Match award and would’ve earned himself a number of new fans as well. (Ole)
Watching Lo Celso play as well as he did last night makes you wonder where it all went wrong at Tottenham. Estadio Deportivo recently claimed that Antonio Conte is set to sell him this summer, which is a real shame.
