'A bit surprised': £34m Everton player thinks Frank Lampard was shocked after his performances in training

Alex Iwobi has said he thinks Everton manager Frank Lampard was surprised by his performances in training.

Iwobi gave an interview to Everton’s official matchday programme ahead of their match with West Ham.

The £34m midfielder talked about his time at the club, and his relationship with Lampard.

Iwobi believes Lampard may have been surprised by how much effort he puts in when training.

“I feel like he probably didn’t really know what to expect from me.” Iwobi said.

“He was possibly a bit surprised at how I train – I always give 100 per cent in training and it’s just getting that out in matches.

“Especially if he was thinking about what he’d seen in the past with previous managers and off the back of the red card in AFCON.

“He told me to play the way I train and he wanted me to go out and express myself. He gave me the confidence to do that.

Iwobi: ‘Lampard was possibly surprised by how I train’

Some of Iwobi’s Everton teammates have previously said how impressed they’ve been with Iwobi in training.

Seamus Coleman said, “In training, he’s full of stepover and Cruyff turns. He’s very difficult to get the ball off.”

While Anthony Gordon added, “He’s very sharp and his combination play is very good. He does some crazy skills too!”

Everton fans won’t be surprised with how well Iwobi’s been training judging by his performances this season.

The Nigerian international has earned himself a starting spot in the middle of midfield.

He’s making it very difficult for Lampard to introduce the likes of James Garner who was signed on deadline day.

The former Manchester United man hasn’t yet made his debut, in part thanks to Iwobi’s form.

He’s also allowed Everton to move the likes to Allan on, who recently joined Al Wahda.

Andre Gomes has also left the club on loan, after trying to force a move in the last few hours of the transfer window.

Iwobi has arguably been Everton’s best player this season, with one report saying he’s ‘right at the top of his game’.
