'8/10': Player offered to Tottenham was his country's best performer at the World Cup yesterday

Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has reportedly been offered to Tottenham and shone for Poland at the World Cup yesterday.

The Poles took on Mexico in their opening group game, struggling to get into the match in the first half, before Robert Lewandowski missed a penalty to win it after the interval.

Guillermo Ochoa will grab the headlines for saving that spot-kick as he continues to repeat his trick of shining at the World Cup in between years of relative obscurity.

But the Polish press were impressed with Szczesny’s performance, with Polsat Sport handing him an eight out of ten, the highest rating of any of his country’s players.

Szczesny shines at World Cup after being offered to Tottenham

Wprost added: Wojciech Szczęsny (6) – He was close to doing a typical Szczęsny at a big tournament when he went to claim a cross and missed the ball, but fortunately Mexico missed the open goal.

“Apart from that, however, the Juventus goalkeeper was doing flawlessly, even saving a few dangerous shots. A big plus was the intervention in Alvarez’s attempt from a distance, when he unexpectedly made the save.”

Eurosport TVN Poland were even more effusive: Wojciech Szczęsny – 4.5/6: “In the first half, he stopped Jesus Gallardo with a brave exit, when a minimal mistake would probably have ended in a goal at 0-1.

“Consciously, he went out to the balls played behind our defensive line. He also brilliantly saved Jorge Sanchez’s shot just before the break. After changing sides, he again saved the White and Reds several times and he was the best player in the team.”

Tottenham have been offered the chance to sign Szczesny and are yet to entirely rule out the possibility of signing the Poland international, according to a report from 90min.

That is despite the 32-year-old spending more than a decade on the books at Arsenal; it would appear that he is going to remain on their radar.

More performances like this at the World Cup could catch Spurs’ eye, although it is difficult to see the fans embracing the Pole because of his Arsenal connections.
