‘7/10’: Chris Sutton now thinks Southgate would have absolutely loved what £20m Newcastle man did yesterday

Newcastle United fans wouldn’t have expected to have three representatives in the England squad twelve months ago.

However, Kieran Trippier, Nick Pope and Callum Wilson are all part of Gareth Southgate’s squad in Qatar.

Chris Sutton has now delivered his ratings, via the Daily Mail, for England’s players after their opening match.

The Three Lions ran rampant against Iran, recording a fantastic 6-2 victory.

The goals were shared amongst the team, with Southgate able to rest a number of key players in the second half.

After months of debate, Trippier was Southgate’s chosen right-back yesterday and had a fantastic game.

Although he didn’t chip in with a goal or assist, his crossing was dangerous and he looked solid defensively.

Wilson was introduced off the bench in the second-half, replacing captain Harry Kane.

The £20m forward could have scored his first tournament goal for England minutes after coming on.

However, Sutton now believes Southgate would have loved Wilson’s unselfish assist for Jack Grealish.

Southgate would have loved Wilson’s assist – Sutton

Sutton gave Wilson a ‘7/10’ rating, and said about the forward: “Southgate will have loved seeing his substitute’s unselfishness late on when this game was already won.

“Another striker might have had the World Cup stars in his eyes and gone for glory. But Wilson teed up Grealish for England’s sixth instead.”

Wilson was through one-on-one with Iran’s substitute goalkeeper and had every opportunity to shoot.

However, he coolly squared the ball to Grealish after the ‘keeper had already committed to closing him down.

The Manchester City winger passed the ball between Iran’s scrambling defenders to add England’s sixth goal.

After the match, Southgate was really impressed with Wilson’s composure in that moment.

When Harry Maguire went down injured, Wilson almost didn’t get his chance to make his World Cup debut.

However, Southgate eventually gave him his opportunity and loved his unselfish assist.

The 30-year-old only has two assists in the league this season, and would have had to fight his striker’s instincts in that moment.

Wilson will hope he gets another chance in Qatar to add his name to the score sheet.
