‘Poor guy’: Jermaine Jenas shares what Newcastle United's Callum Wilson did when he thought he wasn’t coming on for England today

Jermaine Jenas has shared with BBC Sport what Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson did when he thought he wasn’t coming on for England today.

Wilson earned his place in Gareth Southgate’s squad after an excellent start to the season under Eddie Howe.

The 30-year-old bagged six goals and provided two assists in 11 Premier League appearances for the Magpies. Now, he’s gone on to make his World Cup debut for England today – three years on from his last England call-up.

The striker replaced Harry Kane in the 76th minute, but he thought he was coming on five minutes beforehand.

And Jenas has shared that Wilson had a smile on his face after being told he wasn’t coming off the bench just yet.

Jenas shares what Wilson did today

Wilson appeared to be readying himself to be introduced into the action during England’s 6-2 win over Iran today.

But Southgate brought on Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Eric Dier and Marcus Rashford instead in the 71st minute.

And Jenas felt sorry for Wilson at the time, as he looked set to make his World Cup debut.

“I don’t think it is [Wilson coming off the bench]. I think Callum Wilson’s just been told,” he said.

“He had a little smile on his face. Poor guy.”

Of course, Wilson did eventually come off the bench and made an impact on the game as he set-up Grealish for England’s sixth goal.

The Newcastle man was played in behind the Iran defence and could’ve easily taken the shot on himself, but he unselfishly laid the ball off to Grealish for an easy finish.

Southgate will be delighted with his side’s start to their campaign in Qatar as they completely dominated the game.

Wilson impressed from the bench and Kieran Trippier posed a real threat for the Three Lions down the right-hand side.

Trippier will be hoping to keep his place in the side once Kyle Walker returns, while Wilson will be eager to get more opportunities from the bench.
