These days, Premier League clubs are very diverse. Boasting players from a number of different continents and Tottenham are no different – Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia all included.
Son Heung-min is captain while Aussie manager Ange Postecoglou both hail from Asia, while Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr come from African countries. There are a number of South Americans.
It must make communicating both on and off the pitch incredibly hard, whether that be players talking to their teammates – or a manager laying on instructions and tactics. Brennan Johnson is combating that.
The England-born Wales star is in action for Rob Page’s side on Thursday night when they face Finland in a crucial Euro 2024 play-off. The winner will face either Poland or Estonia, for a place at the Euros.

Brennan Johnson learning French to speak to Tottenham players
Sarr, given he is from Senegal, will be naturally fluent in French while Bissouma is from Mali – not a French-speaking country. But, given he played in France before England, he will surely speak French.
There might be a couple of other examples that are not known to the wider audience, of players being able to speak French at Spurs. Johnson is hoping to bridge that gap by learning French himself, now.
Speaking in an interview with GQ magazine, the £50m Spurs player shares how he is finding it difficult – but is doing his best to learn the language. GQ say it is to speak to some of his friends, and teammates.
Sam Diss wrote: “I ask Johnson how he finds distraction amid the noise.” Johnson replied, to GQ: “Languages. “It’s so repetitive. Like, yeah — match the words to the gaps in the sentence. I know that.
“I know how to do a puzzle, but I’m trying to learn a language here,” Johnson added, before Diss wrote: “He’s learning French to connect with friends in the south of the country, and a few Spurs teammates.”
Johnson is starring in first Tottenham season, £50m star’s stats
Johnson has made a wonderful start to life at Spurs – but it could have been very different. He was offered to Manchester United before he made the move to North London, under manager Postecoglou.
Jermaine Beckford recently said that the Wales star “has got everything” and he is certainly showing it on the pitch. He has 10 goals and assists in 22 league games for Spurs – starting only 15 of those.
An impressive return and it needed to be given the level of quality Spurs have out wide. Timo Werner, Deki Kulusevski, Bryan Gil, Richarlison and Son. Johnson has been an excellent signing for Tottenham.
His desire to learn French with the belief that it will help him talk to some of his Spurs teammates is a sign of the kind of player, and character, he is. Perhaps, he will be speaking fluently in no time.
