‘3/10, all over the shop’: Liverpool player slated by national media after his display last night

It was a match to forget for Liverpool at Old Trafford, as Manchester United dominated proceedings and came away with a vital 2-1 win.

A well-taken goal from Jadon Sancho before Marcus Rashford beat Allison in a one-on-one gave the home side a deserved lead before Liverpool rallied and scored a consolation goal through Mohamed Salah.

Very few Liverpool players came away with any credit, with Gary Neville praising young Harvey Elliott after a spirited display.

However, despite only missing one of their regular starting defenders, Liverpool’s back line looked very shaky.

Virgil van Dijk stood like a statue for Sancho’s opening goal, failing to close the winger down.

Andy Robertson failed to make an impact from the left-hand side, and was eventually substituted for Kostas Tsimikas.

But it was Trent Alexander-Arnold who was targeted most by Manchester United, and particularly struggled with the defensive side of his game.

His display was called out Jamie Carragher on commentary last night, believing he wasn’t fully focussed on the job.

Alexander-Arnold slated by the media

Several media outlets slated Trent Alexander-Arnold for his performance at Old Trafford.

The Daily Mail said: “A night to forget. Positionally all over the shop and torn apart by Malacia and Elanga in the first half. 3”

The Liverpool Echo gave him a slightly higher rating: “4. Allowed Elanga to get on top of him too easily having earlier been spooked by Rashford. Not great. Booked.”

The Independent wrote: “4, Shocker of a start with a dangerous foul and failing to stop the cross for the goal inside and then being booked, all in 25’. Improved in terms of some of his delivery from wide, but defensively missed out on plenty of challenges.”

While the Telegraph gave him the highest rating of the bunch, saying: “Given a testing time by Elanga during the first half and was eventually booked for a first half foul on the United winger. Forced to focus on defensive duties. 5/10.”

Alexander-Arnold set the tone for his performance early with two fouls on Anthony Elanga, who capitalised on the right-back’s tendency to sit so high up the pitch.

His delivery in attacking areas didn’t match the high standards he normally sets himself.

The result leaves Liverpool without a league win in their first three matches, with newly promoted Bournemouth the next visitors to Anfield on Saturday.
