'He needs to wake up': Jamie Carragher tears into one Liverpool player v Manchester United before half-time
Jamie Carragher absolutely slammed Liverpool defender Trent-Alexander Arnold in the first half against Manchester United tonight.
Trent was left bewildered in the opening 20 minutes as he endured a nightmare opening few minutes to the game. The England full-back wasn’t in the game at all and in the 17th minute, he was left perplexed as a simple one-two went around him to allow Jadon Sancho to slot home for United.
And while Alexander-Arnold looked on in shock, Sky commentator Carragher pointed out how poor Trent had been in that opening 17 minutes and insisted he had to get better.
“Trent has had as poor a 17 minutes as I can remember. Been really poor. He really needs to wake up,” Carragher said on Sky co-comms.
In fairness to the Liverpool man, he did come back into the game a bit as Liverpool piled the pressure on for the rest of the opening period. Certainly, it was the Reds who finished the first half as the better team.
TBR’s View: Same Old Story For Trent
As good as Alexander-Arnold is, it won’t stop the narrative tonight that he isn’t good enough defensively and this mistake tonight will add fuel to the fire as well.
Trent is a remarkable player on his day but he does get found out at the back at times and his error tonight just showed why there is that opinion of him among some football fans.
Liverpool need better from the right-back, both defensively and going forward. The second period will be massive for both club and player, who have faced a rampant United side so far.
