Back in 2013, a report from The Daily Express says Ally McCoist almost pulled off a real transfer coup as Rangers manager. The then-Ibrox gaffer almost brought in Andros Townsend on loan from Tottenham in 2012. Now, Townsend is a free agent, and is said to be open to a move to join Rangers.
Now 29, Townsend is about to become a free agent at London side Crystal Palace. Like many other Palace players, they are set to see their contracts expire on June 30. He was asked recently whether he would entertain a move north of the border. Townsend replied, considering Celtic or Rangers.
“I’m open to everything,” Townsend told TalkSPORT – as per the Record. “If there’s an option that presents itself and it’s the best one for me and fulfils my needs, I wouldn’t turn it down just because it’s in another country.”
An established Premier League player, ex-Tottenham and Newcastle man Townsend also has 13 caps. Only injury prevented him from being a part of the England squad at the World Cup in 2014. Before then, in 2012, the Express claims that McCoist tried to sign Townsend for Rangers.

Would Townsend be a good signing for Rangers – nine years after McCoist almost lured him to Ibrox?
Without a doubt. First of all, the £55,000-a-week (Spotrac) winger is available. No compensation, no transfer fee. He is still young, an England international that played alongside Steven Gerrard in the squad. He also combined with Jermaine Defoe for England, and at Tottenham.
Plenty of connections, then. Also, because he is currently working with McCoist for ITV’s Euro 2020 coverage – and on TalkSPORT. But a move to Rangers would surely be a massive signing for the Ibrox club, as they embark on a Champions League campaign under Gerrard.
