£24m player Leeds reportedly wanted in the summer now named in worst team of the World Cup

Leeds United only had three players at the World Cup in Qatar, and none of them were able to reach the quarter-finals.

Rasmus Kristensen’s Denmark couldn’t live up to expectations and crashed out in the group stages.

Tyler Adams and Brendan Aaronson fared slightly better, and as reported by Daily Mail, avoided an unwanted accolade.

The pair couldn’t overcome the Netherlands in their opening knockout match.

Tyler Adams had a brilliant tournament, and earned plenty of praise from the American media.

Jesse Marsch will be hoping he can carry that good form into their Premier League campaign when it restarts next week.

Leeds could have had a player who went one stage further in Qatar if their summer business had been different.

The Daily Mail report that summer Leeds target Sergino Dest was named in the worst team of the World Cup.

Using data provided by Sofascore, Dest earned a rating of 6.50 for his performances.

For context, Adams averaged a rating of 7.10, making him one of the USA’s best players in Qatar.

The 22-year-old has had a tough season, compounded by a tricky World Cup.

Dest named in worst team of the World Cup

A report from TEAMTalk in the summer suggested that Leeds wanted to sign Dest.

The right-back was surplus to requirements at Barcelona, and had even been offered to Manchester United.

Leeds went on to sign Kristensen in the summer to fill that position, and he’s quickly established himself as first choice at Elland Road.

Dest was signed with much fanfare by Barcelona from Ajax in 2020 for £24m.

They added a £350m release clause to his five-year contract, suggesting they had a lot of faith in the American as their long-term solution at right-back.

Less than two years later, he was surplus to requirements and eventually joined AC Milan on loan this summer.

He’s barely played in Italy, and Dest’s season was summed up by a poor showing at the World Cup.

Although Kristensen hasn’t set the Premier League alight, he looks to have been a much better investment than Dest.

The American needs to get away from the spotlight in order to get his burgeoning career back on track.
