£22m Tottenham player may just have blown his last chance under Ange Postecoglou

Although Tottenham Hotspur eventually enjoyed a fruitful evening in Manchester, Ange Postecoglou still oversaw some poor performances.

Spurs’ injury crisis is well documented, as is the struggles of their squad players trying to live up to those missing.

And having been handed another huge chance as a starter last night, it now seems as if Bryan Gil has blown it.

Gil started the game extremely well, swiveling on the edge of his box to delicately set up the attack that led to Son Heung-min’s opener – something Gary Neville was so impressed with.

However, as the half went on, it quickly became clear that the game was passing the Spaniard by, a player lacking the physicality to compete.

Jamie Carragher was certainly not impressed, saying Gil ‘looked like a boy playing in a man’s game.’

And whilst some may consider that harsh, a half time substitution may have spelled the end of Gil’s chances under Postecoglou for a few reasons.

Firstly, Richarlison made his return to the bench last night, a huge boost to this thinly stretched squad.

And when he is ready, the Brazilian will be a starter.

Given his recent performances, it does seem as if Dejan Kulusevski may continue in the number 10 position, the player best equipped to fill in for James Maddison.

And although that would leave £22m Gil as the first option on the bench, January additions may change that.

Ange Postecoglou has long been linked with a Celtic-reunion with Jota at Tottenham, a player who would have been useful against Manchester City.

And should Spurs sanction a £25m move in January, Gil would be left out in the cold.

That being said, Gil does have talent, a 22-year-old who has succeeded in La Liga.

Therefore, it may be best for all parties if Gil did then seek pastures new.

Of course, this is all very hypothetical, but also not unfeasible.

Tottenham desperately need additions in January, ones that can have an influence on the starting XI.

And if Bryan Gil can’t take this chance, he may never get a better one.
