Tottenham Hotspur captain Heung-min Son has just won the Best Footballer in Asia award ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Son is currently away on international duty at the Asian Cup, and he is South Korea’s most important player. Ahead of the game against Jordan this weekend, the Tottenham star has received a very prestigious award, beating several big names.

Tottenham’s Son Heung-min beats Cristiano Ronaldo to prestigious award
Tottenham star Son Heung-min is arguably the best Asian player in the world now, and that has been the case for several years.
The 31-year-old, who joined the club for £22 million (Guardian), has been immense for Spurs this season. He has replaced Harry Kane brilliantly and has led Ange Postecoglou‘s side in a very impressive fashion.
Now, while he is away representing his country, Son has been named the winner of this year’s Best Footballer in Asia award. This is the seventh time in a row that he has won it.
Fans in South Korea won’t be too surprised that Son has won it again, but the Tottenham man had extra competition than usual this time around.
The Saudi Pro League comes under the AFC’s jurisdiction, which means all the big-name stars there were in contention to win the award as well.
However, Tottenham fans will be happy to know that their captain came out on top ahead of the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante and Neymar.
The Portuguese superstar came third with 17.06 per cent of the vote. Napoli’s Kim Min-jae secured an impressive 19.54 per cent of the votes and finished second.
Son, the winner, received 22.9 per cent of the votes in his favour.
Son is an unbelievable player
Son Heung-min had a difficult campaign at Tottenham last time out.
The South Korean scored just 10 goals in the Premier League all season, and he looked nothing like his usual self. We later found out that an injury was holding him back.
This season, Son already has 12 goals and five assists to his name in the Premier League. There’s every chance he will hit the 20-goal mark, which would be an extraordinary achievement. Ange Postecoglou has already backed him to be in the Team of the Season.
Ronaldo will not be happy that he didn’t win the award as he has been banging in goals for fun in Saudi Arabia. But, Son has been brilliant in the toughest league in the world, which is probably why he was picked.
