There’s been a bit of chat about Mikel Arteta leaving Arsenal recently.

The Spaniard has been linked with a move to Barcelona after Xavi announced he was leaving at the end of the season.

However, the man himself has shot down those rumours, and now, there’s been another positive update on Arteta’s Arsenal future.

Indeed, speaking on ShotsTV, Chris Wheatley has claimed that Mikel Arteta is set to have contract talks with Arsenal, going as far as to state that he expects the Spaniard to sign a new contract with the Gunners this summer.

Mikel Arteta to sign a new deal

Wheatley shared what he knows about the £160k-a-week Arsenal man.

“Arteta came out in his press conference and said he was upset with those reports and they’re fake. That’s good news for Arsenal who really want to keep Mikel Arteta at the club. Contract talks are expected to resume and continue. I would expect Mikel Arteta to sign a new long-term contract with the club, maybe at the end of the season, maybe just before. Arteta has a really strong relationship with the owners, Stan and Josh Kroenke, and for that reason I don’t expect him to go anywhere anytime soon,” Wheatley said.

Good news

This is a great bit of news for Arsenal.

At a time when Jurgen Klopp is leaving Liverpool and Xavi is leaving Barcelona, there’s something of a leadership vacuum around Europe’s elite right now, and tying Arteta down to a new deal leaves Arsenal in a great spot to push on further and get right amongst that top-end Champions League winning conversation.

Arteta has proven his value to Arsenal over the past few years, and the fact that he’ll seemingly be staying for the foreseeable future is great news for the Gunners.

Fingers crossed Arteta can sign this deal soon and Arsenal can work towards winning more major honours under his leadership.
