Zlatan Ibrahimovic told Arsenal old-boy Olivier Giroud he's the 'best' striker at the World Cup

Zlatan Ibrahimovic believes Arsenal old-boy Olivier Giroud is the best striker at the World Cup – that’s apparently what the Swedish superstar told the Frenchman before the competition began.

Giroud linked up with Ibrahimovic at AC Milan last year. The two won the Serie A title together and it appears they’re both good pals now – so much so that the Swede hyped him up before the start of the World Cup.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic told Arsenal old-boy Olivier Giroud he’s the ‘best’ striker at the World Cup

Before the World Cup began, if you had to make a list of the best strikers in the competition, we’re sure Giroud wouldn’t be in your top five – probably not even in your top 10.

The likes of Harry Kane, Karim Benzema, Robert Lewandowski, Lautaro Martinez, Cristiano Ronaldo, Romelu Lukaku, Memphis Depay, Richarlison, Gabriel Jesus, Luis Suarez and maybe even Edinson Cavani would all rank higher.

However, Ibrahimovic apparently told Giroud that he is better than all of the above players.

The France striker said when asked who the best striker at the World Cup is, as quoted by The Metro: “‘I immediately think of Ibra who said before the World Cup I was the best No.9 in the competition.

“I don’t know who he (the best star striker at the World Cup) is, but surely Kylian [Mbappe] is the best-attacking winger.”

Well, Ibrahimovic’s words to Giroud have been justified.

The Frenchman has scored three goals at the World Cup so far – more than any other player apart from his teammate Kylian Mbappe, who has managed five.

Giroud, branded as an ‘incredible’ player, even surpassed Thierry Henry to become France’s leading goalscorer of all time, which is an absolutely amazing achievement for someone who has often been criticised for his goalscoring.

Les Blues take on England next in the quarter-final of the World Cup. All eyes will be on Kylian Mbappe again, but we won’t be surprised if Giroud has a huge say in the game as well.
