According to reports in Italy, Tottenham Hotspur could be eyeing up one very odd transfer. Tuttosport, as relayed by Calciomercato, are suggesting that Spurs want to sign Iago Falque from Torino. Spurs fans who are thinking that name sounds familiar are right to think so.

The Spanish winger was with Tottenham as recently as 2014. A former Real Madrid and Barcelona youth product hopes were high when Spurs signed him from Juventus in 2011. But he never made the grade at Spurs, playing just one league game. After loan spells at Southampton, Almeria and Rayo Vallecano, he left for Genoa four years ago.

He has since gone on to prove himself a very capable wide option in Italian football. He was brilliant for Genoa, earning a move to AS Roma. After two seasons in the Italian capital, he headed to Torino.

Since the move to Turin, he has been excellent. In 75 games for the club, he has scored 26 goals and provided 18 assists.

“Tottenham was the wrong choice: I looked for the money and not the sporting challenge, I saw the ugliest part of the game

“I was just a number, zero consideration, but that also made me stronger.”

So, on that basis, Tottenham being interested is not a surprise. But Falque is surely unlikely to return. When the two clubs departed, it was hardly on good terms. Falque has spoken on numerous occasions in the past of how he was treated at Tottenham and it is rarely glowing praise.

When he left, in a deal worth a reported £4 million, it was in Mauricio Pochettino’s first summer as manager so the idea they might reunite seems highly unlikely.
