Zajc links suggest a waning faith from Benitez in summer singing Muto

Newcastle United are keen to sign Empoli’s Miha Zajc this month.

Calciomercato reported last week that the Magpies were ready to make an offer for the Slovenian international, with £5.4 million the amount quoted as enough to seal the deal.

Huddersfield Town are also credited with an interest in the player.

In the last few days Zajc’s agent has confirmed the interest of the two clubs, and claimed his client would be ideally suited to the Premier League.

He told TuttoMercatoWeb: “The profile of a player like him in England is increasingly sought after.

“It brings unconventional solutions and added value to the team. In my opinion, the speed with which Miha perceives football is ideal for the Premier League. But the market has just begun.”

At just £5.4 million, he could represent brilliant value for cash-strapped Newcastle.

Where does that leave summer signing Muto?

Rafa Benitez targeting an attacking midfielder is interesting.

The links would suggest that there is a lack of faith and confidence in summer signing Yoshinori Muto.

Muto, who is currently away on Asia Cup duty with Japan, has struggled to establish himself in English football thus far.

He has scored just one goal in 12 appearances, only five of which have been starts.

With Ayoze Perez also in there for competition, one wonders if Benitez actually believes Muto can kick on for Newcastle.

Zajc coming in would certainly hinder the £9.5 million forward’s starting prospects further. Perhaps a loan move could be in the offing for a player who simply hasn’t gotten to grips at his new club yet.
