Earlier this month it was reported that Everton were keen on Danish international Yussuf Poulsen. Calcio Mercato claimed that Everton were one of a number of teams keen on the player, who had impressed in the World Cup for his nation.
The player himself has now spoken about the potential interest from Everton. Talking to Osnabrucker Zeitung he said his phone has been off since the World Cup, as he was looking to completely relax after the summer. But a move to Everton was not likely, as he is happy at RB Leipzig.
“On vacation, I had turned off my phone and only four days ago I realized that we have (Hoffenheim manager) Julian Nagelsmann as coach from 2019, Ralf Rangnick until then takes over and we have brought three new players.
“I do not know anything about an offer, so you have to ask my adviser.”
As far as Everton are concerned, this is good news. The reports that the Toffees were keen on the player were somewhat alarming in the first place.
Poulsen showed glimpses of quality in Russia but his form at Leipzig was hardly eye-catching last term. The 24-year-old played 41 times for Leipzig last season, scoring five goals and providing nine assists.
Considering Everton loanee Ademola Lookman provided five goals and four assists in just 111 games for the same team, the Toffees are better off sticking by their young talent.
Signing the 24-year-old Dane would have been a huge slap in the face to the talented 20-year-old and Everton fans would have been livid with such a decision. The fact the Dane is now likely to stay should also give Everton hope that Lookman can be convinced to reject the advances of Leipzig this summer.
