Youri Tielemans’ rise at Leicester City must be excruciating for West Ham

Things are currently going quite well for West Ham United after an iffy start.

David Moyes’ side have navigated through a very tough set of fixtures and sit 14th in the Premier League table on eight points.

The Hammers are certainly looking better now compared to the first few weeks of 2020/21, and fans will hope to see the team take advantage of their good form against ‘easier’ opposition going forwards.

One area West Ham have been quite good is central midfield, with Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek striking up a pretty decent partnership.

The pair have a good understanding and look like they’ll make things difficult for opposing midfielders.

Arguably though, there is one midfielder in the Premier League who was linked with West Ham who is really starting to blossom.

Youri Tielemans of Leicester City scored his third goal in two games against Leeds United last night, and his all-round game is getting better and better.

Rice and Soucek may have a good thing going on, but Tielemans’ development at the King Power must be excruciating from a West Ham perspective.

Sky Sports reported in January 2019 that West Ham were in the mix to sign Tielemans on loan from AS Monaco.

The Hammers seemingly didn’t push hard enough; he then joined Leicester and impressed instantly, turning his move permanent for £40 million in the summer (BBC Sport).

And the 23-year-old maestro has been absolutely brilliant for the Foxes since his move and continues to improve.

His technical quality, intelligence and vision set him apart from lots of other central midfielders, and West Ham must be pained to see how well he’s doing, given their lack of any player quite like him.
