'You'll see this lad get better': Michael Owen blown away by 2017 Liverpool signing after Porto display

Michael Owen has told BT Sport (broadcast on 24/11; 22:12) that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has everything needed to get better and better after his performance for Liverpool against Porto in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Reds now sit 10 points clear at the top of their group. Goals from Thiago Alcantara and Mohamed Salah saw Jurgen Klopp’s men beat the Portuguese side at Anfield.

Unsurprisingly, many of the Liverpool fans were blown away by the display of Thiago. But there was another successful performance from the man who came off at the same time as the Spain international.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was superb alongside Thiago and Tyler Morton. He completed three successful dribbles, according to Whoscored. He also managed to put in a very good shift, contributing defensively also.

The Englishman has obviously had a tough time with injuries in the past. But he was lauded by fans after the win over Arsenal at the weekend. And he has impressed once again in their latest game.

Following the victory, Owen insisted that he ticks so many boxes for the Reds.

The pundit told BT Sport: “He literally does do a bit of everything, doesn’t he? He can shoot from distance, he can get goals, he can see a pass, he doesn’t shirk away from his defensive duty.

“He shows a whole range of different attributes. And it just really is, trying to stay fit for a period of time and you’ll see this lad get better and better.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain about to enjoy some luck as Liverpool star approaches peak?

Oxlade-Chamberlain only managed to make 17 appearances in all competitions last season. Two years earlier, he only featured twice.

He is already on 14 for this campaign following his showing against Porto.

And that could be particularly significant. When you consider that the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are both playing as well as they ever have at the age of 29, there is absolutely no reason to think that Oxlade-Chamberlain could not only just be about to hit his peak.
