Pep Guardiola has named the two Newcastle United players who caused Manchester City massive problems yesterday.

Speaking to the Athletic, the City boss highlighted Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron as the duo who really impressed him

Newcastle put in a brilliant performance against the Premier League champions yesterday and the pair were standout performers against Guardiola’s men.

Saint-Maximin provided two assists on the day and won the free-kick for Trippier’s superb goal.

Almiron caused City problems all afternoon with his tireless running and penetrating runs. And he put the Magpies 2-1 up in the first-half as he arrived in the box to convert Saint-Maximin’s cross.

Guardiola has acknowledged the impact the duo had on the game and admitted they caused his side massive problems.

“The only problem is that when we break the lines and we can run, if you finish the action it’s not a problem, but if you don’t finish, you don’t control Saint-Maximin and [Miguel] Almiron,” the City boss told the Athletic.

Eddie Howe’s men caused City problems throughout the game as his team created plenty of chances against the champions.

The Magpies went 3-1 up just after half-time after Trippier’s superb free-kick. But Guardiola’s men turned on the style and got back on level terms with two goals in quick succession.

But the Spanish boss has clearly acknowledged the threat that Saint-Maximin and Almiron provided for Newcastle.

The pair have been criticised in the past for not providing enough end product for Howe’s men.

But both players certainly provided that yesterday and did so against elite opposition.

Howe will be hoping that both players can continue this type of form over the season as Newcastle aim for a top-half finish.

The English boss has been in the market for attacking reinforcements this summer. And while Newcastle still need to add depth to the positions, it will be encouraging for Howe to see his attacking players performing this well.
