‘You could see’… Jackie McNamara names the two Celtic players who Lazio clearly targeted on Tuesday

Celtic’s defeat against Lazio is still being poured over almost 48 hours after Brendan Rodgers’ side crashed not only out of the Champions League but Europe altogether.

And whilst the need to add quality was hammered home by Brendan Rodgers immediately after the game, it looks like Lazio have told Celtic where they should be focusing their attention when they finally decide to dip into the transfer market.

Jackie McNamara was watching the game in Rome when he shared a weakness that the Serie A side were exploiting in the 2-0 defeat and from the first game at Celtic Park back in September.

McNamara said [BBC Sportsound], “I think from the first game Lazio targeted certain areas to hurt Celtic.

“You could see that they were trying to achieve in between [Liam] Scales and [Greg] Taylor and a wee bit last night as well.

“In fairness to Scales, I think he has come in and done reasonably well. Making that step up to that level and coming from Ireland into Celtic’s first team.

“It does take time. You can’t just jump into that level and expect the team to be great. He will get the experience from that.

“That is an area that defensively they have struggled. There’s not a lot of there’s no backup the left-back area.”

The left-back position has been a bugbear of many Celtic fans this season. It seems that Greg Taylor’s form has fallen off a cliff ever since Ange Postecoglou left for Spurs.

The Celtic full-back has been so poor this season that there are fears he could miss out on a Euro 2024 spot next summer in Germany.

There is no doubt improvements are required at Celtic to compete on the continent. It’s whether or not the Celtic board are willing to make the investment to do so that worries that worried the Celtic fans.
