Newcastle United were cruelly beaten 3-2 at Old Trafford after a 90th minute Manchester United goal, but manager Rafael Benitez can take heart from his side’s performance.
The Magpies raced into a stunning two-goal lead inside the opening 10 minutes courtesy of goals from Kenedy and Yoshinori Muto to stun Jose Mourinho’s team.
But hosts Man United rallied in the final 20 minutes of the game to score three times through Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and eventually Alexis Sanchez to earn three points.
Newcastle remain in the Premier League relegation zone and winless going into the international break, but things will turn around for them if they can replicate the display they showed at Man United on a more consistent basis.
One man that caught the eye in particular is Muto, who was brilliant on his first league start for Newcastle.
The Japanese centre-forward moved to St James’ Park for £9.5million (Sky Sports) in the summer and supporters have had to be patient to see him fully get up to speed.
But he made the most of his opportunity at the weekend and has to be the biggest positive that Benitez can take away from the defeat.
Muto netted his first goal for the North East club in spectacular fashion, as he created space for himself in the penalty area with a smart turn before firing beyond goalkeeper David De Gea.
His incredible work-rate at the point of attack was a major boost too and he surely has to get a regular run in the starting XI after such a high quality performance.
