‘Yesssss’, ‘absolutely love this’: Some Spurs fans erupt over ‘long overdue’ announcement

A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans have taken to Twitter to rejoice in the news that Spurs icon Ledley King has become the club’s new first-team assistant.

King came through the ranks at White Hart Lane before making his Tottenham first-team debut in 1999.

The 39-year-old spent his entire professional playing career at Spurs, making 323 appearances, becoming captain and lifting the League Cup in 2008.

King, who also won 21 caps for England, announced his retirement from professional football in 2012 as a result of the chronic knee injuries that plagued much of his career.

He continued his association with Tottenham through his work as a club ambassador and will now be assistant first-team coach to Jose Mourinho.

“I am extremely pleased to be welcoming Ledley into the first team group as we continue our preparations for the new season,” the Spurs boss told the club website.

“He has a tremendous affinity with this football club and the fans appreciate just how much he has accomplished as a true Spurs man both on and off the pitch.

“We have developed a good relationship since I arrived, and we hope to use his experience and insight to support the work we are doing with the squad.”

In late July, Mourinho told reporters how he had decided to “go again in one direction that I had before in other clubs which is to help local people to develop, instead of bringing one more assistant with me”.

As quoted in Metro, he said: “It’ll be someone with a history with the club, connected with the club and let’s try to give him an opportunity because I’m not really a fan of people moving with a lot of assistants and forgetting local talent and people from the house.”

The announcement has gone down very well with the Spurs faithful, as shown by some of the replies on social media:
