'Yes yes yes': Some Everton fans really want 'perfect' 49-year-old to replace Carlo Ancelotti
Plenty of speculation has arisen as to who could be the next Everton manager in wake of Carlo Ancelotti’s departure.
The Toffees are now looking for a new manager after Ancelotti left Goodison Park on Tuesday and rejoined Real Madrid.
The Athletic claims that Everton are drawing up a shortlist of potential replacements.
However, some Everton fans have another man in mind – Duncan Ferguson.
Ferguson became an Everton legend during his playing days.
He enjoyed two spells with the Toffees and made over 200 appearances in blue.
Ferguson also won the FA Cup in 1995.
Now a coach at Everton, Ferguson took the reins on a caretaker basis in December 2019 after Marco Silva’s sacking.
The Scot steadied the ship with one win and three draws before Ancelotti was appointed permanently.
Everton fan reaction
Who has been linked with the job?
One of the standout names on the reported Everton shortlist is Steven Gerrard, who was a legend at bitter rivals Liverpool.
Other managers linked with Everton include Liverpool icon Rafael Benitez, West Ham’s David Moyes, former Roma boss Paulo Fonseca, Ajax’s Erik ten Hag and Belgium’s Roberto Martinez.
Ferguson may not be a bad shout as next Everton manager – he’s incredibly passionate about the club and did a decent job in caretaker charge.
That said, Evertonians would probably have to give him time to find his feet as a permanent manager on a long-term basis.
Ancelotti is a highly experienced manager who knew exactly what to do at the top level, while Ferguson will need a bit more time.
That said, everyone has to start somewhere, and this could be a good chance for Ferguson to get his managerial career properly under way.
