'Yes, unfortunately': Nuno has some 'painful' news for Spurs fans

Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo has confirmed that Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura won’t feature in their midweek League Cup third-round clash.

The Tottenham boss also couldn’t answer whether the attacking duo could feature in this weekend’s North London derby trip to Arsenal.

Bergwijn and Lucas picked up injuries in the Europa Conference League trip to Rennes last week, which Spurs drew 2-2.

Speaking ahead of Tottenham’s trip to Wolves on Wednesday, Nuno provided a fitness update.

The lowdown on Scotland's THREE men hunting first caps

“Yes, unfortunately [Lucas and Bergwijn] will remain out,” quotes him as saying.

Elaborating on Bergwijn’s injury, Nuno said: “He has an injury on his foot, a sprain, he twisted his ankle… it’s very, very painful.

“The injury needs to settle down and prevent him from feeling pain – it’s very painful now.”

And when asked whether Bergwijn could be fit to face Arsenal, Nuno replied: “I cannot answer that.

“All the injuries have a process. We hope the players improve. We don’t enjoy it. It is painful to see them out.

“But at the same time we’re hopeful they recover sooner or later and can rejoin the group.”

Spurs now at a disadvantage ahead of Arsenal trip

Nuno continues to have selection headaches to contend with early this season amid injuries to players.

Had the north London derby taken place before the international break, it would’ve surely been advantage Spurs.

But now the tables have turned, with Tottenham in poor form and up against a resurgent Arsenal side.

Hopefully Bergwijn and Lucas return to fitness ahead of the trip to the Emirates and bolster their side’s strength in depth.
