There was certainly something of a scramble on over the summer for Yaya Toure. The Ivorian had become a free agent at the end of his contract with Manchester City. Of course, he was an absolute star for the club. In his eight years with City, the midfielder played over 300 games and won the Premier League on three occasions. His 2013-14 campaign might be one of the best ever from a midfielder in the top-flight.
That season he played under the guidance of Manuel Pellegrini. So when the Chilean got the job at West Ham United in the summer, Toure was quickly linked with the club.

West Ham had the need, the resources and the manager to bring Toure to the London Stadium.
However, his outspoken agent Dimitri Seluk made it clear that West Ham was beneath him.
“I would paraphrase the quote from The Three Musketeers, spoken by Athos. Maybe West Ham is a good club for an African boy, but it’s not (good) enough for Yaya Toure.”
– Dimitri Seluk on West Ham interest
West Ham fans were likely never that sure the Hammers could sign the Ivorian legend. But hearing his agent so unequivocally rule them out was certainly disappointing.
In the end, Toure headed back to his former club Olympiakos.
West Ham fans can, however, rest easy in the comfort that Toure was clearly not the man they needed.
Toure has not impressed on his return to Greece. He has played just two Super League games and his agent recently confirmed that Toure may have to consider an exit in January with teams from Japan, Saudi Arabia and China all keen.
West Ham fans will be glad to hear that Toure’s best days are behind him and that is being proven in Greece.
