Yaya Toure says Liverpool have a player who is genuinely ‘scary’

Yaya Toure isn’t a man who is easy to intimidate.

Indeed, standing at 6 ft 3 being stronger than most other players in Premier League history, there are very few footballers who could genuinely intimidate Yaya Toure.

However, speaking to Goal, Toure has been playing a game of Word Association, and he’s named the player in world football history who he associates with the word ‘scary’.

Now, Toure has played against some truly frightening players over the years, from Sergio Ramos to John Terry, but according to the Ivorian, the scariest player he can think of is Virgil van Dijk.

Indeed, when asked to name a player he thinks is scary, Toure picked out Van Dijk.

Toure was asked to name a footballer he finds scary.

Interestingly, Toure’s first instinct was to name Virgil van Dijk.

It’s not all that surprising to hear Van Dijk described in this way. After all, Van Dijk is one of the strongest players around, and Van Dijk is a world-class defender too.

“Scary?” Toure was asked.

“Van Dijk,” Toure said.

Toure also made a number of other interesting connections between certain words and certain footballers.

Yaya Toure’s only game vs Virgil Van Dijk

Toure and Van Dijk aren’t necessarily two players you’d associate with one another.

Indeed, Toure was a Premier League star of the early 2010s, while Van Dijk has been one of the poster boys of the early 2020s.

However, Toure and Van Dijk did actually play against each other one one occasion back in November 2015.

Toure says that Van Dijk is a scary player, but he didn’t seem to frightened on that day, as he put in typically brilliant performance against Southampton on that day.

Of course, Van Dijk has become a much better player in the nine years following this game as he’s won the Premier League and the Champions League at Liverpool since, but in the one game these two legendary players had against one another, it was Toure who came out on top.
