Xhaka comments may hurt Arsenal's hopes of Denis Zakaria move

Arsenal appear to have been dealt a transfer blow this week following comments made by Granit Xhaka ahead of the summer.

Xhaka has endured an incredibly mixed time since joining the Gunners. He cost the club £35 million in 2016, according to BBC Sport.

There have been times when he has looked brilliant in the middle of the park. However, he has had a number of setbacks and struggled to silence all of his doubters.

But Mikel Arteta has tended to stick by the 28-year-old. So on the face of it, it would seem that he would have been happy after seeing comments made by Xhaka earlier this week.

Celtic fans left short-changed by Sky Sports once again

Xhaka was asked by RP Online about a potential return to Borussia Monchengladbach this summer. But he suggested that he wants to stay in North London.

“There are always rumours at the end of the season, that’s for sure,” he told RP Online. “But I still have a two-year contract in London and I am very happy with my family here. First of all, I’m looking at a successful Euros with the national team.”

As mentioned, it would appear that Arteta would be pleased by Xhaka’s response. However, based on reports from earlier this month, it may be that the Swiss’ comments may not actually help the Gunners this summer.

According to 90min, Arsenal are keen on signing Denis Zakaria. And interestingly, it was claimed that the Gunners had discussed a swap bid involving Xhaka going the other way.

It was suggested that Zakaria is deemed to be an upgrade on Xhaka. And with Arsenal working with a limited budget, a swap may represent their best chance of landing the 24-year-old.

But of course, Xhaka appears to have now ruled out a potential return to Gladbach.

Obviously, the situation could change if Arsenal make it clear that they want Zakaria. It does not appear that anything to do with a swap was put to Xhaka when he was asked about rejoining his old side.

But as things stand, it seems that Arsenal may have to come up with another plan if they hope to bring Zakaria to the Emirates.
