Some fans felt as though the 22-year-old was just one of a few Spurs stars at St James’ Park who were trying to make things happen.

Simons has just one assist from his first 11 matches in a Tottenham shirt, but surround him with better, and those numbers should increase.

During the game, Spurs supporters took to X to defend the youngster and discussed why they were feeling positive about him.

One fan said: “I think a player like Rogers or Kulusevski in the double 10 setup would really help Xavi tbh, albeit he just needs to settle into this team and country. You know, there is so much there, it just isn’t being shown yet.”

“You can see flashes of the talented player, but he is struggling at the moment. I’m sure he will improve a lot once he gets up to speed,” added another.

There was yet more praise for the winger: “For sure, his best game. Just the final ball missing atm. Could have just had an assist if Sarr had found the corner.”

Finally, another supporter stated: “People expect goals and assists, that’s the final touch, his final piece has been missing, but everything else has been top.”

Thomas Frank agrees with Tottenham fans on Xavi Simons

Frank was also pleased with how Tottenham attacked against Newcastle and hailed the impact of both Simons and Bergvall.

Speaking after the game, Frank told the media: “I think the way we played the game, especially how we built it from behind, phase one, especially phase two, I think we controlled the game much more.

“I think we had some short connections in the middle of the pitch. I think we found Lucas and Xavi in good positions.

“So I think it was one of our better offensive performances for the season. You could say it wasn’t like we created a 500 per cent chance, but we created some really big chances.”
