Xabi Alonso has told the UEFA website that Arsenal can win the Europa League this season, but has identified three other candidates to hold aloft the trophy come May next year – as well as stating Champions League clubs will also have a chance.
The Gunners have made a solid start in the Europa League this season, winning all three matches in their group game – albeit against lesser opposition in Rapid Vienna, Molde and Dundalk. In the league, they have been less consistent.
An excellent win over Manchester United and even a Carabao Cup win over Liverpool on penalties, and a Community Shield, have promised much. But losses to Leicester and Aston Villa and then a draw against Leeds is proof of a lack of rhythm.
Spanish icon Alonso picked out Arsenal as a potential candidate to win the Europa League this season despite their topsy-turvy form. He also picked out Roma and AC Milan as contenders, as well as Unai Emery’s Villarreal.

“There are many teams [who could win it]; Arsenal, Roma, AC Milan, the ones that finish third in the UEFA Champions League [groups will bring some] great players into the Europa League,” Alonso said.
“It’s still too early to call. Villarreal are another team to watch. Emery has the experience, and he has great players as well.”
TBR’s view – Could Arsenal really win the Europa League?
Before that is possible, Arteta needs to sort out some issues. He needs to rid the Gunners of their defensive frailties, and find the right centre-back partnership. With Pablo Mari returning to action, perhaps the Spaniard and Gabriel could combine.
He needs to work out his best attack. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – wide left or up front? Alexandre Lacazette – does he start? Nicolas Pepe – is he as good as the player himself thinks he is? Many headaches must be solved.
But the Gunners certainly have the players required to do it. It is whether Arteta can get them performing to their best.
