Xabi Alonso has now shared whether he thinks Liverpool will win the UEFA Europa League or not.

The 42-year-old made the comments ahead of Friday’s draw in Nyon, Switzerland.

So, what did Xabi Alonso say about Liverpool and the UEFA Europa League? Let’s take a look…

Xabi Alonso makes Liverpool prediction at UEFA Europa League draw

Well, the Spaniard is backing the Reds – who drew Atalanta – to go all the way under Jurgen Klopp this season.

Alonso was quoted by Fabrizio Romano as saying: “For me it is clear. I really see Liverpool as the favourites to win the Europa League.”

Liverpool have never actually won the UEFA Europa League under Klopp.

The Reds reached the final in the German’s first season in charge, losing 3-1 to Sevilla back in May 2016.

Since then, Liverpool have exclusively competed in the UEFA Champions League thanks to some outstanding performances in the Premier League under Klopp, reaching the final on three occasions and winning one.

Spaniard is spot on

We agree with Alonso – who is apparently keen to replace Klopp this summer.

Liverpool are by far the strongest team remaining in the UEFA Europa League, with only AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen appearing to be genuine threats – with all due respect to West Ham, Atalanta, Roma, Benfica and Marseille.

While Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen must be accounted for having remarkably avoided a single defeat in the Bundesliga this season, Klopp’s men have more than enough quality – and also vast experience of knockout football in Europe – to overcome any side standing in their way.

The only potential stumbling block for Liverpool will be the Premier League title race, and whether the demands of that fight against Manchester City and Arsenal result in some injuries.

Whatever happens, it is sure to be a highly entertaining end to the 2023/24 campaign.
