Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react after the club announced that Matty Longstaff had joined Aberdeen on a season-long loan.
What’s the story?
Well, this is a strange one.
Longstaff had plenty of options in England, including West Brom, but Shola Ameobi has organised a move to Scotland for the £18,462-a-week man.
The 21-year-old has also signed a one-year contract extension with the Magpies, to preserve his long-term future.
Former Newcastle player Stephen Glass will be tasked with helping Longstaff develop at Aberdeen, where he is manager.
Interestingly, Matty’s older brother Sean Longstaff spent time on loan with Kilmarnock back in 2017, before breaking into Newcastle’s first-team.
Hopefully, Longstaff’s loan to Aberdeen has a similar effect on his career back on Tyneside.
Newcastle’s handling of Matty Longstaff has been strange

In our view, Ameobi hasn’t really done as much as he could’ve for Longstaff.
Newcastle experienced real difficulty in keeping the huge prospect at St James’ Park amid interest from Udinese.
As Sky Sports revealed, Longstaff rejected a new contract from Newcastle amidst the uncertainty.
However, the club eventually persuaded him to commit his future to the club, only to find him an odd loan move.

With all due respect to Aberdeen, a move to a side in the Championship would’ve been much better for Longstaff’s development.
Some Newcastle fans agreed, claiming that a move to West Brom would’ve been just what he needs.
Now, Longstaff’s career has taken a turn which we don’t believe will be too helpful for him.
Nevertheless, let’s see what the Newcastle fans on Twitter have been saying about the club’s announcement…
